How To Take Screenshots in Mac OS

Screenshots are helpful in a number of ways. May it be taking a snap of a funny conversation, sharing your screen to someone with an image, sharing your high score from a game, or showing an error message by capturing the window in an application, screenshots are an ideal way to show someone what your screen looks like.

Mac provides you an easy way to take screenshots. And there are so many ways a screenshot can be captured. Below are the methods to capture a screenshot :

Take Screenshot of Your Entire Screen As File :

To take screenshot of your entire screen, first arrange the windows and make the screen as you want to be in the screenshot.

Press Command + Shift + 3 all at a time

You will hear a Camera click sound which confirms that the screenshot has been taken successfully and placed on desktop as a .png file. The filename will be [Screen shot Date and Time label].

Take Screenshot of Your Entire Screen to Mac Clipboard :

Arrange the windows and make the screen as you want it to be in the screenshot and press the below key combinations

Press Command + Shift + Control + 3 all at a time

You will again hear a camera click sound and the Screenshot will be saved directly to the mac clipboard. You can open any image editing application like photoshop and press Command + V to paste the screenshot.

Take Screenshot of Custom Area of the Screen As File :

Set up all the windows and make the screen to look how you want it to be in the screenshot.

Press Command + Shift + 4 all at a time.

Your cursor will turn into a crosshair reticle. Place the crosshair cursor at one of the corner  (say top left) of the area that you want to capture and drag it to the opposite corner (say bottom right) until you select all the area you want to capture. The crosshair cursor will show you the pixels count if you want to use the screenshot in a specific application.

When you are satisfied with the selected area then release the cursor. You will now hear the camera click sound and the screenshot will be saved on desktop as a .png file with filename [Screen shot Date and Time label].

Take Screenshot of Custom Area of the Screen to mac Clipboard :

First arrange the screen as you want in the screenshot.

Then press Command + Shift + Control + 4 all at a time.

Your cursor will turn into a crosshair reticle. Hold and drag the area that you want to capture and then release to take screenshot. This time the selected screen will be saved to mac clipboard. You can paste it in any image editing application.

Take Screenshot of Specific Window of your Mac Screen:

If you want to take screenshot of only a selected window of an application, then follow the below steps

First Press Command + Shift + 4 all at a time.

Once the cursor turns into a crosshair reticle, press the Space bar once. Now the cursor turns into a Camera icon. Click on any window to take screenshot of only that particular window and it will be saved as a file on your desktop.

If you want it on your clipboard then press Command + Shift + Control + 4 all at a time and then press space bar. Click on any window and the screenshot will be saved on your clipboard.

Note :

While dragging the cursor, if you are not happy with the selection, then you can press ESC key to cancel the screenshot.

While selecting the area, you can press Option key to change the lock point to centre.

Pressing Shift key while selecting the area will lock all the sides except the direction in which you are moving the cursor.

Some videos does not allow you to take screenshot of the content of their window due to copy protection.
