What is VPN? And why do you need one?

VPN or a Virtual Private Network is a software which allows you to create a secure connection to a network over the internet. In simple words, when you connect to a VPN, your connection is secured and encrypted. You can use a VPN to establish a secure connection and prevent someone (your ISP) to access your browsing history. You can also use VPN to hide your identity and browse anonymously or using a different identity.

Originally VPN’s were created for business purpose. They were used to connect to business networks over internet. They were basically used to access business networks from home. But now VPN is used for many purposes like accessing restricted content and hiding your identity.

Why do you need a VPN?

Good question. Why would you require a VPN when you can normally use your internet connection to access anything. I live in India and Spotify is not available here. But it’s available for other countries like US, UK, Romania, Israel and others. So, what would I do to access Spotify? Yes, you got me. I would use a VPN to connect to any country where Spotify is available and I can access it without any problems. Basically VPN is nothing but a server and when you connect to a VPN, you are connected to a server located somewhere in the world. The traffic from your computer is passed through that server and your internet connection behaves as if it is connected to that server’s country.

Benefits of VPN

Bypass Geographical restrictions

As said earlier, if an app or a website is banned in your country then you can use a VPN to access them. You connect to some country where those websites are not restricted and you can easily access them. You can also watch Netflix using VPN if it is not available for your country.

Protect yourself from untrustworthy WiFi networks

Suppose you got near a free open WiFi but you might know that connecting to any unknown WiFi is dangerous as your data can be captured. What you can do in this situation is connect to your VPN software and then connect to the open WiFi. Your connection is now encrypted and there are almost zero chances of your data being captured.

Hide Identity or Gain Anonymity

Using a VPN, you can hide your IP address and location. You can browse as if you are connected to another country. You can also hide DNS information with a good VPN.

Protect yourself from being logged

When you hide your identity using VPN, then you can protect yourself from being logged. Many browsers logs your browsing history and track you. Its good to use a VPN.

Encrypt data from your Computer to VPN Server

When you use a VPN, your data is sent encrypted. Most of the ISP (Internet Service Providers) track your data. VPN allows you to protect yourself from being tracked by encrypting the data.

Which VPN to use?

There are many VPN providers which provides good encryption and anonymity. The popular ones are Nord VPN, Express VPN, Tunnel bear VPN, Avira VPN, Goose VPN, psiphon VPN and many more.

  1. I can vouch for NordVPN. Been using it for a year and one month. I first bought a subscription for a year and just recently renewed it for 3 more years. They have awesome deal for that – just use coupon ‘HAPPYNORD’. All in all it’s a reliable service for a relatively small price.
