How to Take Backup of WhatsApp Messages :

There are two methods to take backup of whatsapp conversations.

Method 1 ( Google Drive ) :

You can take backup of your whatsapp chats, photos and videos to google drive. Follow the below procedure to take a backup to google drive.

  • Go to WhatsApp Settings.
  • Click Chats. Then Select Chat Backup.
  • Now you will have the option of ‘Google Drive Settings’.

  • Select the google account to which you want to back up.
  • Select the frequency (Daily, Weekly, Monthly etc).
  • You are done. Your whatsapp backup is stored on your google account.

You will have the option to choose whether you want your videos to be backed up. If you have a lots of videos then you can avoid back up of videos to save storage on your google drive account.

Method 2 (Automatic ) :

Another method is automatic backup which is done by whatsapp. Most of you who use whatsapp might already know that whatsapp automatically takes backup of all our conversations daily at morning 2 AM. But these messages are in encrypted form when they are backed up. So they can just be restored without viewing. They are stored in encrypted form in the Media Folder present in WhatsApp Folder in SD Card. You can copy that media folder or the entire whatsapp folder. That is your whatsapp backup.

How to Restore WhatsApp Messages :

To restore the whatsapp messages, you have to copy the WhatsApp folder to the SD card which you have taken backup in previous step. Once you place that folder in root of SD card, now install whatsapp. During Installation, it will show that Message Backup has been found, Do you want to restore? Select Yes and you have all your conversations restored back to your whatsapp.

If you have taken backup to google drive, then after installing the whatsapp you can choose google account to restore the backup.

Whatsapp usually updates its messenger, so with time, more backup options might be available for the users. So, we will be updating if any new method is available.

  1. Hi,

    Before I uninstalled whatsapp (Monday 6th October 2014) I made sure I did a
manual backup of my messages so when I return I would have my messages
    retrieved.

But when I installed whatsapp again and clicked on restore it would only
retrieve messages from before 14th June 2014.

I have found the backup file in the databases folder of whatsapp of the
most recent backup but it will not restore onto the app. It keeps restoring
the 14th June 2014 messages and not from 6th October 2014

    Please help.

    1. either your backup was not done properly and due to this restoring of messages is not successful. or watsapp is not detecting the correct backup file. Are you sure backup was done? check the modified date of the backup file by going to file properties. if it is the lastest backup file then the last option u have is there are many online services which converts the watsapp backup files to messages u can us them to restore. hope this will help you. any more questions let me know.

    1. i guess this is the only method to move videos folder to another folder and then do a backup to google drive. after backup completes, restore the videos folder to whatsapp folder.
